Research = Popcorn

Here are a few of the movies/performances/shows I've been using as research over the past couple months (or at least as an excuse to make popcorn), and some brief thoughts I got from them:

On keeping it real:
  • The minutely personal can have a really universal appeal.
  • Not a lot has to happen for something to feel real.
  • The will plays an important role in consciousness, not just in what we remember, but in how we make things happen.
  • Consciousness can feel most natural when it's over-the-top -- push it past the limit, get ridiculous, be wild.

On repetition:
  • Familiarity is appreciated, like a punchline.
  • Varying length and pacing can have huge effects.
  • The exact same lines and words can have different meanings depending on context.
  • Super subtle differences in actions matter in meaning.

What happens when you wait a couple weeks to review your notes:
  • Desperation can be funny or sad -- go through desperation first so that the rest is believable. (What does this even mean???)

Up Next:

 The True Story, or Vicious & Multiple & Untrue After All will premiere as part of First Person Arts RAW at the First Person Arts Festival (November 8-17, 2012).
