But I can't seem to stop making shows, so I'm sure as hell not gonna stop talking about them.Ameliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11659524794406925260noreply@blogger.comBlogger49125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5780061316784982066.post-30085644320528365062015-01-12T13:25:00.002-05:002015-01-24T09:33:19.793-05:00Piece of Cake<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hi.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Long time, no see.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Or write.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As promised in <a href="http://viciousandmultiple.blogspot.com/2013/11/bad-ideas-good-ideas.html">my last post</a> over a year ago, I've spent a lot of time focusing on learning rather than creating. At times, it's been really hard not to jump at opportunities to put work out there (I'm looking at you, <a href="http://solowfest.com/" target="_blank">SoLow Fest</a>), but honestly, most of the time, it's been refreshing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've taken writing and acting classes with <a href="https://www.walnutstreettheatre.org/education/" target="_blank">Walnut Street Theatre</a> and <a href="http://www.playpenn.org/classes" target="_blank">PlayPenn</a>. I did an <a href="http://www.artistsu.org/" target="_blank">Artists U</a> workshop, and even started up with an awesome accountability triangle. I've gotten back to some poetry. And eventually, I started a new script.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
An actual script.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With more than one character talking.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With A BOY talking.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Because sometimes, boys are smarter than you think. They say smart things. And you creep out of bed in the middle of the night to take notes on your phone in the bathroom. And that is when you know it is time for a new play.</div>

In honor of being done with what turned out to be an amazingly simple show, a list of all the awful things I almost did:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li>me shouting certain lines from the audience or balcony</li>
<li>puppets (not a bad idea in itself, but something I know nothing about)</li>
<li>inserting pauses after lines I think you should laugh at</li>
<li>making the music as loud as the speaking, thereby cancelling out all words</li>
<li>advertising the show on OkCupid</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is in part another thank you to all the smart folks that steered me away from these things (although I made the OkCupid decision on my own, thank you very much), but it's also a lead in to what's next this time around:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nothing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Okay, not nothing, but no shows. For now. In the past year, I dove into writing for the stage, then I dove into performing, then I dove into directing. I think I need a breather. And maybe also to take the time to learn some things, rather than diving. To swim, if you will. So if you have any leads - classes, books, people to talk to - on the basic how-to's of creating performance, gimme a holler.</div>

You know <a href="http://viciousandmultiple.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-selected-annotated-bibliography-for.html" target="_blank">the</a> <a href="http://viciousandmultiple.blogspot.com/2012/11/a-selected-annotated-bibliography-for.html" target="_blank">drill</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>"Tell All The Truth" by Emily Dickinson</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This short poem begins "Tell all the truth but tell it slant, / Success in circuit lies." Uh, duh. I live for this shit. <i>Fundamental Frequencies</i> is my first presented work that doesn't claim to be 100% fact, but that doesn't mean it's not true. And if you saw <i><a href="http://viciousandmultiple.blogspot.com/p/past-shows.html#truestories">True Stories</a></i>, you know I find truth in repetitions and rehashings. Side story: I recently told Megan that the last line is the only true thing in the story. If you're looking for a sure-fire way to nearly lose an actress, that's it. Side side note: I recently read that writers direct because it's "easy." Like "the hard part is over." Ha.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><i>The Penelopiad</i> by Margaret Atwood</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you don't know by now, I'm going to reference Margaret Atwood every single time I write a thing. Live with it. I only recently got to <i>The Penelopiad</i>, a retelling of the story of Odysseus from the perspective of his wife Penelope. It surprised me to realize how accepted Penelope's "official" position is - she stays at home for TEN YEARS waiting for her probably dead husband, raising her son by herself, and hosting a bunch of rude dudes trying to marry her. Clearly, there's more story here than we get in <i>The Odyssey</i>. But towards the end of Penelope's story, you realize there's also more story than she's telling. After all, she didn't <i>really</i> raise her son all by herself - she had a shit-ton of maids, a dozen of which Odysseus ordered killed upon his return. Odd. A big part of <i>Fundamental Frequencies</i> is about power and control in relationships and in the stories we tell about them. Lucy took notes the whole time I was reading this one.</div>

</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>"The Boys of My Youth" by Jo Ann Beard</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I know, I know. We've been through this one too. But I want to focus on the title story specifically for this one, because of some comments I got at the showing a little while back. "The Boys of My Youth" is at first glance a story about boys, a lifetime recounting of crushes and related antics. But Beard must have gotten the same note I did - those related antics are the key. You can reveal a lot about a character through her interactions with her friends and the things they say about her. After the showing, I added another section with Lucy and her sister Cara, saving myself a ton of boring exposition. Another great note from the showing: when you're already doing about a billion crazy things, don't name a girl Toni.</div>
<br />

<li style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/202372.The_Boys_of_My_Youth?from_search=true"><i>The Boys of My Youth</i> on Goodreads</a></li>

</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Other recommended reading</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These ones get a bit more theoretical about communication and language, but a bibliography isn't a works cited, and I really enjoyed them, so I think you should check them out. <a href="http://www.freelibrary.org/">Literally</a>.</div>

Well, this is kind of shameful for a project where I'm working with an actual musician, but <a href="http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fundamental-frequencies-by-amelia-longo" target="_blank">I promised you</a> an ungodly number of music puns. And boy, did I deliver. Happy final script to me.</div>

Okay, we're admittedly still figuring out what the hell this show is, which makes it especially hard to share and promote. This week, we came to the earth-shattering realization that the show is a response to the sort-of question, "Tell me about King."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was after a whole conversation about how maybe Lucy, the narrator, is in a recording booth, or maybe things are set up tennis court style, or maybe there are a bunch of stuffed animals. (I perhaps wisely kept my previous idea about shouting out lines from the audience to myself.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Art is hard, guys. But somehow <a href="http://www.jjtiziou.net/jj/" target="_blank">JJ Tiziou</a> managed to capture it visually.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a story about communication, how you don't actually know what other people are thinking if you don't tell them what you're thinking. How sometimes language can feel like a second rate method for getting anything across. What it feels like to find out you're not the only person manipulating a relationship, or the only person being manipulated. It's about being in control, or thinking you're in control, and how the words we use fit into that.<br />
<br />
We've got roughly two weeks to make that all clear.</div>

<span id="goog_1889461014"></span>This week, the fabulous <a href="http://www.jjtiziou.net/jj/" target="_blank">JJ Tiziou</a> joined us for some photo fun. It's a little scary committing to promo images when you're still not quite sure what the show is, let alone looks like, which made me especially happy to be working with JJ.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you're not familiar with his work, I'm gonna start you off with <a href="http://www.everyoneisphotogenic.com/" target="_blank">Everyone is Photogenic</a>. It's his mantra, one of his big projects, and his current fundraising campaign to save the world. Maybe I shouldn't be highlighting someone else's crowdsourcing campaign while I've got <a href="http://igg.me/at/funfreq/x/2657004" target="_blank">my own going on</a> (ahem), but stay with me - it's relevant.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Photos can be totally awkward frightening things, but JJ knows his shit, and it's not just about the gear he has. We ate cookies. We improvised light stands and colors. We all crammed into a tiny box that no one got locked into, not even once, I swear.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started off trying to document the process (metaphotos!), but as you can see below, I gave up pretty quickly. I could say it's because JJ's a much better photographer than I am (true), or that I was stuck holding a gourd on a broom or else counting one-mississippi in the dark most of the time (also true), but really -- and maybe this is related to the gourd -- I was too busy having a good time to worry about documenting the documentation, or making sure the documentation was the exact thing the show is going to be, or what the hell even is this show going to be?????</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's a show about beautiful humans and created by beautiful humans. It's going to be gorgeous. Which is a great feeling to have going into a weekend of creating the next draft. #everyscriptisphotogenic</div>

(Also I forgot to take any photos.)<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>When I discovered the badass old-school PA at <a href="http://neighborhood-house.com/" target="_blank">CCNH</a> (photo to come)</li>
<li>When Joo Won laughed heartily at the phrase "dope at keys"</li>
<li>When I made Megan say "f*%k" like five sentences in a row, and she didn't bat an eye</li>
<li>When there was a Batman poster in the ensemble room at CCP</li>
<li>When we had to get up and walk around in circles shortly after I told Megan there were two unreliable narrators really</li>
<li>When we spent half of rehearsal watching a wedding across the street (kidding, <a href="http://www.hybridgearts.org/" target="_blank">Hybridge</a>, kidding! like a quarter, tops)</li>
</ul>
<br />
It's my process, people.<br />

I got this photo from <i>True Stories</i> in an email this week. It was taken by the wonderful <a href="http://www.mariamollerphotography.com/" target="_blank">Maria Möller</a> when the show was up last fall. <a href="http://www.neighborhood-house.com/" target="_blank">Christ Church Neighborhood House</a> is using it in a bunch of their promo materials this season, which makes me feel incredibly proud and grateful.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="265" src="https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=c3a169ddc9&view=att&th=14118ef60517f2c2&attid=0.1&disp=emb&zw&atsh=1" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been spazzing out a bit lately about the logistics and the writing and the promotion and oh, everything for <i>Fundamental Frequencies</i> -- and it reminded me that I did this. I did a show. I got all those lovely ladies to get up on stage and read my words, and you know what? No one died.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And that reminded me that I haven't *really* shared this video yet, partially because it took me nearly a year to get it together, and partially because I've been so focused on <i>Fundamental Frequencies</i>, and yeah, partially because it's a little scary to have it all out there, visible to the world.<br />
<br />
But seeing that photo reminded me of how amazing it felt to share my work, how supported I felt by my collaborators, my friends and family, and the audiences that came out to see it, and how important it was for me to share that story. And if I can just remember that that's why I'm working on the logistics and the writing and the promotion and oh, everything right now, then it's a whole lot more . . . fun, honestly.<br />
<br />
With that in mind, please enjoy.<br />

I recently made a big change to my original <i>Fundamental Frequencies</i> story by grafting a whole other character onto it. To give you a glimpse, dear Reader:<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>There are three things you should know about King:</i></div>
<i></i><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><i> 1. King is a character.</i></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><i> 2. King’s character is based on someone I used to know.</i></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><i> 3. King’s character is also based on me.</i></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i> <i><i>. . .</i></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i> <i><i>Okay, and:</i></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><i> 4. In real life, King wasn't even in this story. I've just got two stories to tell, three if you count the dog, and I think it’s important you hear them all, all at once.</i></i></div>
</blockquote>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
This story has existed without King for a few years now, way before King even existed. So why just plop him in, however gracefully and artistically?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<ol>
<li>My writing in <i>Fundamental Frequencies</i> is super vague, whereas my writing about King is crisper, more traditional-short-story-feeling. Hopefully, it'll give you something to hold onto while the rest of the story is swirling around.</li>
<br />
<li>I'm not calling this non-fiction, and I'm also not calling it fiction. The feelings are true, but it's definitely not factual. King doesn't even belong in this story as far as facts are concerned. But I really hate that divide. It's one of the things I envy about music: no one makes you label songs as fiction or not fiction. (Unless of course you're Taylor Swift, and we're not even going into that right now.)</li>
<br />
<li>I've been writing a lot about King lately, and I'm not quite ready to stop.</li>
<br />
<li>After a year or so, it apparently becomes confusing to refer to a person as New Boy. Also after a year or so, if you cross me, you're probably gonna find yourself on stage. Don't worry, boo. You know I call dibs on super villain in all my work.</li>
</ol>
</div>
</div>

A lot of people, what you may call fans, have asked me what's next. Okay, maybe not really. But you're reading this, so I'll bet you're wondering.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well folks, I'm thrilled to announce that I'll be learning from the amazing crew over at <a href="http://www.hybridgearts.org/" target="_blank">Hybridge Arts Collective</a> as their Fall 2013 <b>Blueprint Breakout Series Resident Artist</b>.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
We'll be working on <i><b>Fundamental Frequencies</b></i>, a story-poem-thing that I started in Sound of Words (the same class that incubated <i><a href="http://viciousandmultiple.blogspot.com/p/past-shows.html#truestories" target="_blank">True Stories</a></i>). It's about sound. About how language is just sound, and is a much more abstract communication tool than we usually think, but how sometimes, it gets the job done. There's a boy in one part, and a dog in another part. There are some facts, but it's mostly just truth.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Oh, and I'll be using music in this one.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Good thing we start tomorrow.<br />

To the neighborhood of <b>Queen Village</b>, especially the very tolerant residents of South Hancock Street, the kids at Number One China who dragged their entire families out to watch the park dance every night (and even yelled "Encore!" once), Philadelphia Java Company for the most fabulous pre-show hyper-sweetened iced coffees, Kennett and For Pete's Sake for being great spots for both meetings and celebrations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To <b>Rachel Cheetham Richard</b> and to <b>Rob Emanuele</b> for taking photos, and additionally to Rob for filming the dress rehearsal, and then creating the loveliest little promo video ever.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But mostly, to my creative team:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To <b>my mom</b>, for answering all our questions despite being totally wary, for allowing us to take over her living room, for picking up lines last minute and improving like a genius, for letting us back in at the end of the show.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To <b>Sarah Gladwin Camp</b>, for just offering to help out and then diving in to a the best full-out pop dance and movementy wandering around.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To <b>Julius Ferraro</b>, for being not just willing but enthused to try anything, from crazy dance moves to roof climbing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To <b>Liz Green</b>, for being psyched about this project from day one, for learning garage band in like a week, for buying headphone splitters at the last minute.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And to <b>my brother</b>, for being inspirational in all the best ways, for putting up with all this craziness, and mostly for being my sibling friend again.<br />

Throughout this process, multiple folks have brought up how few sibling stories there are out there. So, obstinate virago that I am, I set out to list those I've encountered, as well as find new ones. I've <a href="http://viciousandmultiple.blogspot.com/2012/11/a-selected-annotated-bibliography-for.html" target="_blank">done it before</a>, and I'll do it again -- here's this show's shout out to influential, instrumental, and essential writers. All my literary bitches stand up.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><i>Jacob Have I Loved</i> by Katherine Paterson</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<i>Jacob Have I Loved</i> is about these twin sisters growing up on a tiny Maryland island. Sara Louise is super tough and goes out crabbing like a man and is always sacrificing for her sister, who is delicate and takes voice lessons and who everyone is always gushing over. It's stunningly good at making you feel how miserable Sara Louise is without it being a pity party. It’s also good at hinting at the fact that maybe she’s missing something, that her own stubbornness is what’s dug her into this miserable hole.</div>

</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><i>Ender's Game</i> by Orson Scott Card</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i>
I don't know if most folks think of <i>Ender's Game</i> as a story about siblings, but Ender's relationship with brother and sister drive most of his actions and his basic understanding of other individuals and environments. Ender, Valentine, and Peter are each incredibly intelligent and hyper aware of the irrelevance of the adult world, and the subtle changes in their love for, fear of, and understanding of one another feel wildly real.</div>

</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><i>Cat's Eye</i> by Margaret Atwood</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<i>Cat's Eye</i> is mostly about the twisted friendships of the main character Elaine's youth, the ways that children can and do torture one another that we hardly ever talk about. But for much of the beginning, Elaine's family lives on the road hunting bugs with her entomologist father. Her only real companion is her brother Stephen, and from the chain of command in games they play together ("Lie down - now you're dead.") to the way they grow apart but remain essential to one another once they start going to school (Stephen goes through this hilariously stoic crush on a girl that he relays in code only to Elaine), Atwood conveys the particular relationship of siblings perfectly. In case you haven't heard enough <a href="http://viciousandmultiple.blogspot.com/2012/11/a-selected-annotated-bibliography-for.html" target="_blank">from me about Ms. Atwood</a>.</div>

</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><i><br /></i></b>
<b><i><br /></i></b>
<b><i>Invisible Monsters</i> by Chuck Palahniuk</b><br />
<br />
Okay, there's a shit ton of secrets in this one, and I don't want to spoil a single moment because it's all so goddamn lovely. I will say that a combination of early sibling rivalry and perceived parental favoritism plays a huge role in the characters' lives. I think I need to re-read this one, and get the new remix reissue from the library.<br />

</ul>
<br />
<br />
<b><i>We Have Always Lived in the Castle</i> by Shirley Jackson</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Okay, so this one's about siblings living alone because one of them may have killed off the rest of the family in a lovely little arsenic-in-the-sugar-bowl incident. And they're both probably in need of some major psychological assistance. But the way they feel they need to protect each other from the outside world, and the way they can't manage to protect each other from themselves is awfully familiar. Additionally, Jackson does a phenomenal job of detailing the feeling of a private person entering a public space, how hard you have to work to pretend that you don't feel like everyone is paying close attention. Liz likes to talk about the "electric public" in my writing, and I think this is the kind of thing she means.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Every goddamn thing by JD Salinger</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
All the stories about the Glass family ("Franny," "Zooey," "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters," and "Seymour: An Introduction") are basically an extended meditation on how family, especially siblings, get you into the mess you're in, and how they're usually the only ones who can get you back out. In <i>The Catcher in the Rye</i>, Holden's sister Phoebe is just about the only person who can motivate him to do a damn thing. And then there's "Just Before the War with the Eskimos," "For Esmé—with Love and Squalor, " and "Teddy" in <i>Nine Stories</i>. Ugh, just read every goddamn thing by JD Salinger.<br />

It's opening night. I'm about to head out to do things like pick up extra ipods, tie little strings around scrolls, and hide everything everywhere. But I wanted to leave you with this sestina.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's not the best poem ever, and it's not really related to the show; it's actually about my bike.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But my bike's in the show too, you know, and sometimes my bike and I don't really understand one another, sometimes my bike drives me nuts in fact, like right now the fender's bent funny for no reason and it makes this awful squawking sound -- but it's my bike, and when I forget where I parked it, or someone tries to hit it, or I leave it in the basement all winter, I kind of lose my shit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So I just wanted to say, thank you, bike.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And while I'm at it, thanks to everyone that appears in this show: characters, co-creators, small children battling in the parking lot across the street who pause to watch me kind of lose my shit once a night.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>sestina for my bicycle</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tonight I arrived</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
in a rush</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
much too slow, much delayed</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
to see the glint of your crooked tire</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
half a block away, the sweet solemnity of the post,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
around which, your inevitable twist.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Do I myself twist</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
that way? Well, could I arrive</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
any other way? Without abandoning my post,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
could you rush</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
into my vision, my tired</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
spinning? What was it that was delayed?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If I delay</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
the answer, the question seems to twist</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
around a great turning wheel, an abandoned tire.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As soon as I arrive</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
at the top, I rush</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
back to the bottom, hesitant to post</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A reply, hesitant to post</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
another question even, afraid that, in the delay,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
the gap or synapse, you will rush,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
your grip will twist,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
making impossible, without departure, an arrival.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I shuffle my feet, made slow next to your reeling tires.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I walk faster; I grow tired.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I leave you locked to the post,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
find that I arrive</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
anyway, was only delayed,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
not made impossible, requiring only a twist</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
in the schedule, is it so hard to rush?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Is all you make capable, even, rushing?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With each turn of your tires,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
am I not twisting</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
my own? At your post,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
alone, do you not serve a purpose? Serve to delay,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
or perhaps allay my fear of returning home alone, a singular arrival?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Half a block away from the post, I stand as your tires</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
grin lopsided. I delay my smile, my face a twist.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
How is it I rush, yet you arrive?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

I wish I could convey the tone of my voice in this post title. Just imagine that I'm doing what I'm doing in the photos below, during my first dress rehearsal, with a real live audience, when my dad comes outside and starts hollering my name the way only a Longo can holler.</div>

I cannot write on the fabric.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My handwriting looks like an ax-murderer chicken.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What I wanted to write in the first place doesn't even make sense.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I cannot get the fabric to stick to the place mat thingies.</div>

Am I really using twist ties in my props?</div>

There were a whole bunch of Longo's at my parents house for Father's Day this weekend. At one point, my three nieces came up to me and asked about my show.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Oof.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I talked about sidewalk chalk and alleys, photographs and dance moves. They gave me maybe two minutes before totally calling me out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"My mom says it's about you and Uncle [name redacted] fighting."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Double oof.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"You can talk about the fighting, you know."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Yeah, we fight with our brothers all the time."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"And then we make up."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Yeah, they're <i>brothers</i>."<br />
<br />
And that's what's going to get me through this week.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

Songs about reconciliation or figuring things out. Songs about family. Songs I just like, and I can't explain why they fit.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Movement.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Geez.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
How did I get myself into this?</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, a couple reasons. First, <i>So Cruel</i> is a whole lot of following me around and listening to my voice in headphones. If I don't do something interesting with my body, ya'll are gonna get bored, wander off to a whole other park, and just listen like it's a podcast. Fine.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And second, we decided there needs to be a pop song in the middle. And I should dance to it.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Okay, okay, it's more relevant than that. My brother and I had this <b>"hip hop . . . kinda techno cool dance music stuff"</b> band (my mom's actual words, actually in the show) a few years ago, which is how a lot of the drama between us started (yes, there is a segment of the show that kinda feels like <i>Behind the Music</i>).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Part of this show is about me reclaiming that time, remembering that I was a pop star, that we were pop stars together, so that I can talk about that time like it's not just tragic, but hilarious, bewilderingly impressive if I do say so myself, and something that is totally still a part of me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I get it, I get it. But do I have to dance?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Liz says yes. And the part of me that is not just chickenshit and wants to make this a good show says yes. So I summoned all my acting powers to email the fabulous Sarah Gladwin Camp and <i>act like</i> I was totally ready for her to bring the stun gun that is her choreographic game to rehearsals.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, Sarah did a lovely little movement piece in my show <i><a href="http://viciousandmultiple.blogspot.com/p/past-shows.html#truestories" target="_blank">True Stories</a> last</i> fall. I've also seen Sarah do stuff that looks like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.greenchairdancegroup.com/uploads/4/1/3/0/4130634/2505445_orig.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="400" src="http://www.greenchairdancegroup.com/uploads/4/1/3/0/4130634/2505445_orig.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And <a href="http://www.greenchairdancegroup.com/uploads/4/1/3/0/4130634/6440383_orig.jpg" target="_blank">this</a>. And <a href="http://www.greenchairdancegroup.com/uploads/4/1/3/0/4130634/4183280_orig.jpg" target="_blank">this</a>. Dude, if you haven't checked out <a href="http://www.greenchairdancegroup.com/" target="_blank">Green Chair Dance Group</a>, I don't know what you are doing with your life. They are <a href="http://www.greenchairdancegroup.com/uploads/4/1/3/0/4130634/5488024_orig.jpg" target="_blank">amazing</a>. But, you know, more po-mo than <i>pop stars</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wait. Except for that time I saw them dance in gold lame in <i>Tandem Biking and Other Dangerous Pastimes for Two</i>. I can't find a photo of that, but this gets close:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.greenchairdancegroup.com/uploads/4/1/3/0/4130634/5175809_orig.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="290" src="http://www.greenchairdancegroup.com/uploads/4/1/3/0/4130634/5175809_orig.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What I'm saying is, I should have known how good Sarah's awkward pop dance suggestions would be. I should have been ready for a notebook full of moves like <b>hip-hop-bike</b> and <b>bad-butterfly</b>. And <b>so-you-think-you-can-dance-dad-drop</b>. And <b>cool-DJ-stack-arms</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But somehow, I'm still reeling today.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Other things I wasn't ready for: Sarah transferring those dance moves to the part where I'm out of the secluded park and basically in the middle of an intersection, and the very talented, very amenable, very owed-a-beer Julius Ferraro joins me across the street to trade moves.<br />
<br />
And passersby shout things like "Woot woot!" and "Get it, girrrrrl!"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Does a show qualify as boundary-breaking if it breaks the boundaries of one particular person? i.e. the performer? i.e. me?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After a few minutes of trying out this amazingly awkward pop dance, Sarah says, "Don't <i>try</i> to be awkward. The amount of awkward you already are is exactly enough."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Not only do I do an awkward dance in the middle of my show, I am going to have to be <i>honestly awkward </i>about it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
So, if you see me out rehearsing, just know it only looks awkward because it's honest. Otherwise, it'd totally look like this:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/2PEG82Udb90#t=02m02s" width="560"></iframe><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"><u><br />
</u></span></i> <i style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"><u>So Cruel: a sibling serenade</u></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: center;">will premiere as part of the <a href="http://solowfestival.blogspot.com/">SoLow Festival</a></span></i></div>

The weather being <a href="http://images2.fanpop.com/image/photos/8800000/Rain-harry-potter-8851032-492-603.jpg" target="_blank">what it is</a> today (please click that link. <i>please</i>.), I'd like to talk about what's it's like to work outside on a site specific show.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Awful.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Okay, and also fun and wild and inspiring. But here are some things we've encountered so far:</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">A really psyched dude from the 7-11 who recognized us from multiple neighborhood skulkings, and wants to bring his young daughter. The reply from Liz (my wonderful director): "Well, there are no bad words." Meanwhile, I'm stuck in a loop on the island in the middle of the street, because <i>someone </i>is <i>supposed </i>to be cueing me here.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">An equally miffed dude on South Hancock -- who I presume thought Liz and I were hooligans (to be fair, we had slurpees, and were maybe hovering near his stoop) -- who just kept saying, "Is everything okay? I just want to make sure everything's okay." Liz's (later) reaction: "I'm pretty sure we're older than him anyway!"</li>
</ul>
<i></i><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><i><br /></i></i></div>
<i>
</i>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><i>Liz, you may want to start a support group with Meg over the things I reference in my blorgs. May I suggest meeting at Watkins?</i></i></div>
<i>
</i>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">A magnificent walk-through in the rain, and I mean RAIN, last Friday, because we had to get it in before Liz left for the week, and also because WE ARE BADASS.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">A group of actual hooligans (read: teenagers) who smoke up in the park where I have to do my crazy dance. We basically try to out-posture each other: they talk about who rolls the sexiest blunts, I leap on toadstools and do dance moves from the <a href="http://serialkillercalendar.com/VHSWASTELAND/HIGH-RES-VHS-COVERS/THE-29-MINUTE-WORKOUT.jpg" target="_blank">29-minute-workout</a>.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Speaking of, tomorrow's rehearsal is all about the dance moves. I even have a movement consultant! You'll hear all about her after tomorrow, believe me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Sarah, there's a regular meeting at Watkins you might want to sign up for.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<br />
